Hulanicki
Barbara Hulanicki began her career in 60s London. In 1964 she founded
the influential and wildly successful BIBA boutique, an icon of
hip 60's and 70's London.
BIBA was a hangout for artists, film stars and rock musicians,
with the Rolling Stones, and David Bowie among the regulars. By
the time Barbara left the company it had taken over a 5-story Art
Deco department store and BIBA cosmetics were sold in 33 countries.
When Barbara moved to Miami Beach she became a much sought after
designer of interiors and exteriors, single-handedly conceiving
Miami Beach's then re-emerging Art Deco District. Her projects began
with Woody's on the Beach, (designed for Ron Wood of the Rolling
Stones). Followed by restaurants and nightclubs including Who's,
Sempers, Match Club and Bolero.
She worked with Gloria and Emilio Estefan to design the Cardozo
Hotel, their recording studios, their private home on Star Island,
as well as consulting on BONGO, the Estefan's restaurant project
in Disney World, Orlando.
Barbara Hulanicki has also worked closely with Chris Blackwell
founder of Island Records and the Island Outpost chain of boutique
hotels. For the Island Outpost chain Hulanicki designed the Marlin,
the Cavalier, the Leslie, the Netherlands and the Kent, as well
as some Caribbean properties including Compass Point and Pink Sands.
For her work Hulanicki has received awards from the American Institute
of Architects and the association of Florida Architects.
